Simply put, the slot system is the official definition for the overall limitations that your character must abide by. Since the beginning of the site, we have inadvertently created this system through a series of restrictions and classes (Ninjutsu Master and Focus, Taijutsu Master and Focus, Jack of All Trades, and Omnipotent). However, Administration felt it would be beneficial to have a thread solely dedicated to explaining what we mean - reading between the lines, so to speak.
As stated in the Character Classes & Ranks thread, your character is able to learn all of the abilities associated with their class tree (Nin or Tai). The shinobi can then choose non-specialized styles of their opposite preference, and learn techniques of b-rank and below for Focuses and Universal for Masters.
From this, the slot system stems. Essentially, every character has six slots that they are allowed to distribute to specific arts. Essentially, every unique tree (Releases, Ninja Arts, taijutsu, fuuinjutsu) effectively occupy a "slot." The only "arts" that do not take up a user's slot are Universal Ninjutsu or Universal Taijutsu. Adding to all Classes gain two bonus slots depending on the Class; Ninjutsu Classes gain two slots that can only be used for Ninjutsu styles, Taijutsu Classes gain two slots that can only be used for Taijutsu styles, and Both Jack of All Trades and Omnipotent gain one slot each for both a single nin and Tai style.
Kekkei Genkai, Clans, Kinjutsu and Professions each have their own slots to themselves; a character may acquire 2 Kinjutsu normally and 2 additional through Perks, they may also go into a single profession normally while being able to attain a second through Perks as well. Kekkei Genkai and clans, however, only have a single slot in recognition of the character's bloodline.
