The history of the Sumi Clan is based on the ancient Chinese Folk Tale of Ma Liang and the Magic Paintbrush. It was a story about a poor but talented painter- called Ma Liang – who received the gift of a magic paintbrush. This paintbrush had the ability to bring life to anything that was painted with it. The young boy used it to help his fellow villagers survive under the tyrannical rule of a greedy Emperor.
Over the centuries the story had become greatly exaggerated, and the family name evolved from Liang to Sumi. Some elements of the story are true, however, in that the Sumi Clan is a clan of artists with the ability to bring their art to life. Because of this, they have been negatively seen as a clan of mystics or sorcerers and are sometimes outcast by other villagers because of their mysterious techniques.
Members of the Sumi Clan often are seen wearing kimonos for their comfort. They all have pale skin, as their skin truly doesn't tan well, for their skin is very fair. They all have dark hair, unless dyed another color, and generally have dark colored eyes. Members of the Sumi Clan generally stand between 5' 1" to 5' 6" for females and 5' 9" to 6' 1" for males. Generally fairly tall, these individuals then focus on making their appearance less frightening so as to maintain patronage.
The clan is not run predominately by either male or female. Indeed, there is no true clan hierarchy, for everyone simply lives their own quiet lives. To the Sumi Clan, art is an expression of freedom, and the ability to live ones' life as they will it is paramount to their beliefs. There is a deep bond of trust that goes through the bloodline of the Sumi Clan, as well as to those who join the Sumi Clan, that no action shall ever be taken by one member of the Clan to another member of the Clan that would ever remove the sanctity of freedom, either in life or expression.
The Sumi Clan, as a whole, has no true goal beyond the creation of the best art that they are capable of. The interpretation of that art is completely up to the user, so long as it does not infringe upon the ideas of freedom that the Clan holds so dear. If a Clan member is caught infringing upon these rights, they are considered to be outcasts from the Clan, and will have every active Sumi member hunting them down.
